SAN JOSÉ, CA – “Welcome, one and all, to BALLET SAN JOSÉ 2013 GALA! Tonight, we celebrate the beginning of an exciting new era in the history of BALLET SAN JOSÉ, in the cultural advancement of the South Bay and Silicon Valley, and in the evolution of the performing arts ecosystem in the Bay Area an Beyond” writes STEPHANIE ZIESEL, Executive Director of BALLET SAN JOSÉ in the GALA program. And her words express our feelings because the all-star GALA, as previously announced by BALLET SAN JOSÉ Artistic Director JOSÉ MANUEL CARREÑO, was only the beginning. A night of many luminaries, two of them AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE’s Artistic Director KEVIN McKenzie and CEO RACHEL MOORE. The 2013 GALA held at the San José Center for the Performing Arts, included cocktails, a dinner followed by a performance, and a VIP post-performance party at the the end. The special evening, was also the celebration of the inaugural year of BALLET SAN JOSÉ’s new Artistic Director JOSÉ MANUEL CARREÑO, The program began with the GALA MARCH, choreographed by DALIA RAWSON, a dance performed by the students from BALLET SAN JOSÉ school, dancing to an excerpt from TSCHAIKOVSKY’s ballet the Swam Lake. The dance was perfectly synchronized. The dance was followed by a lineup of Guest Artists which included, in the order of their dances: REBECCA KROHN and ASK LA COUR. ANA SOPHIA SCHELLER and GONZALO GARCIA, GILLIAN MURPHY and TOMAS FORSTER. JULIE KENT and MARCELO GOMES ADIARYS ALMEIDA and JOSEPH GATTI. JOAQUIN DE LUZ . MEGAN FAIRCHILD and DANIEL ULBRICHT. LORNA FEIJOO and NELSON MADRIGAL. MISTY COPELAND and MARCELO GOMES, MARIA KOCHETKOVA and TARAS DOMITRO. There was also an Excerpt dance from GLOW STOP from PHILIP GLASS, choreographed by JORMA ELO danced by BALLET SAN JOSÉ’s Artists: AMY MARIE BRIONES, CINDY HUANG, ALEXSANDRA MEIJER, ANNALI ROSE, OMMI PIPIT-SUKSUN, JING ZHANG, DAMIR EMRIC, JAMES KOPECKY, JEREMY KOVITCH, JOSHUA SEIBEL, MAYKEL SOLAS and KENDALL TEAGUE. The music was played by SYMPHONY SILICON VALLEY under the direction of BALLET SAN JOSÉ’s DIRECTOR AND CONDUCTOR GEORGE DAUGHERTY. Interpreted by the high caliber of Ballets’ stars, all the dances look marvelous on that night. Each dance, an unprecedented display of overt feeling.
Each movement of arms and legs, demonstrating an impeccable technique. Each spin was fast, as the dancers spinned around the stage. Each plié was perfect, each “Fish” beautiful to look at, each jump high with both legs extended horizontally in the air, one arm up, above the head the other behind the chest, forming a perfect horizontal line with the extended leg.
And as they danced, every dancer, used his or her legs and arms to form enthralling figures, creative pas de deux, arabesques, dances in pointé, impossible to describe in words. In over two hours, the GALA captivated the audience with a display of the mastery of ballet dancing. For lack of words to describe the experience, some of the pictures provided to CULTURAL WORLD BILINGUAL may give our readers a visual idea of some of the magic moments the audience experienced on that magic night.
The unforgettable GALA 2013, would not have been possible without the leadership and support of BALLET SAN JOSÉ,s Board of Trustee, led by MILLICENT POWERS, along with the extraordinary support of GALA Co-Chairs AGATHA & STEVE LUCZO and MILLICENT & JOHN POWERS. |
