Born in Clichy-sous-Bois, Seine-Saint-Denis, outside the city of Paris to a family of Sicilian immigrants, he was considered Italian citizen, but later on obtained a French citizenship while retaining his Italian citizenship.

The tenor began his career singing in Parisian Cabarets, but later on, influenced primary by the films of MARIO LANZA and recordings of many tenors, switched to opera after winning the LUCIANO PAVAROTTI's International Voice Competition. ALAGNA made his professional opera's debut singing the role of Alfredo Germont in Verdi's La Traviata with the Glyndebourne Touring Company.  As his reputation grew, he was invited to sing at major theatres which included La Scala in 1990, Covent Garden in London in l992 and the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1996.

But what catapulted tenor ALAGNA to national stardom, were his performances in the role of Romeo in Roméo et Juliette by Gounod, at Covent Garden in 1994. Since then, tenor ALAGNA has sang tenor roles in operas of Verdi, Bizet Puccini, Donizetti, Massenet Gluck, Leoncavallo Faure, Berlioz and others, and has been an advocate of restoring to prominence the neglected French operas.

But opera lovers may remember him by his role of Romeo at the MET, and the reason is that on December 15, of 2007, while he was singing the role at the Metropolitan Opera starring soprano ANNA NETREBKO in the role of Juliette, their performance was broadcast in 447 theatres worldwide in high definition, and it was seen by 97,000 people.
